For a limited time La Prima, in partnership with Market District and Giant Eagle, is pleased to offer Mexico, Chiapas, El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve. This organic, fair trade coffee is farmed by the women producers in the El Triunfo Biosphere Reserve evergreen cloud forest among the mountains of Sierra Madre de Chiapas. Our medium roast Chiapas is deeply sweet and wonderful to enjoy throughout summer's long days.

Campesinos Ecológicos de la Sierra Madre de Chiapas (CESMACH) was founded in 1994 by smallholder coffee farmers in order to organize against the high number of commercial intermediaries dominating, profiteers loaning money at extremely high interest rates, and the absence of pre-financing and technical assistance.

In 2005, a group of six women members of the CESMACH co-op, all of whom managed and worked their own farms, organized to promote educational workshops about coffee cultivation and to highlight the contributions women make to the management and labor on family farms.

Beginning in 2012, coffee from individual women producers was kept separate. CESMACH Women Coffee Producer offerings comprise hand-picked and sorted coffees grown on farms of 4 hectares or fewer. Women's lot coffee incorporates a price premium, which is paid in an effort to support these women who, more often than not, are single parents providing for their families. These premiums were used to construct vegetable gardens and in the future it is hoped women's health programs will benefit.

This community has a high prevalence of cervical cancer. Women's health focused, Cafe Femenino & Grounds for Health served the CESMACH women coffee producers by providing examinations for over 500 women in this underserved community. The 224 women members of the CESMACH co-op work to empower themselves by organizing to improve lives and to push for the perfect cup of coffee.
